Update :
By the look of things u turn za Eastern Bypass will be Ngong road styro .This will work for now .The speed of concrete base laying inaendelea poa now past Corner heading to Nairobi Gate .
The distance with this base layer is approximately 5 km starting from KFC /Shell Kamakis .

Anafanya kazi Buana .

A user at Skyscrapercity thinks we got a raw deal .

I use this road very frequently and every time I am on the road I can't stop doing the math and analyzing how a raw deal this road got in terms of scope and Budget..

For example, I just discovered recently that no section will have service lanes unlike previously thought and mentioned in the original EIA... For example, they had excavated both sides of the road between Thika road and Naivas (appx 1.3Km and I was thinking there will be a service lane along that section.. but unfortunately, they were doing that coz part of the current road at that section will be the road median, so they had to create space from both sides of the road to accommodate the median.. so no service lanes there... :cry: Again the two carriageways are so close to each other even near the u-turns such that a truck turning will bring traffic on both sides to a standstill...

Number 2 and most is the cost and scope: when I compare this project with other similar projects (at least of the same size or much bigger, I see a lot of daytime robbery here... which can be attributed to direct award with no competitive bidding...) See examples below.. focusing on the same class of road i.e Class A - main trunk road highway..

Eastern Bypass (This project) : Cost & Scope :: 12.5Bn for 2 additional lanes over 27Kms

Kenol - Marua (Lot 1) : Award date 19th August, 2020 - 8.5Bn for 4 lanes (complete overhaul even of the old road) over 48Kms

-- I was in Sagana and the scope and quality of this road is marvelous.. already the Sagana river bridge and Makutano Interchange can not be compared with any of the simple bridges on the Eastern bypass.. in terms of bridge numbers there are almost if not more than 10 bridges that I saw... Eastern has only 5 and most are minor the drivers can hardly notice there is a bridge.. the excavations again can't compare with the eastern bypass where most of the work had been done in phase 1 over 10 years ago... then most of the areas is flat for the eastern bypass... I also noted a lot of retaining walls and culvert works along the Kenol Marua.. the scope is worth the cost.. Some areas like Kambiti have already been forever transformed with quality work including drainage work and climbing lanes..

-- Now. coming to the cost, Eastern is consuming a whooping 12.5Bn for just additional 2 lanes on one side (with no interchanges apart from the 5 bridges) while Kenol Marua lot 1 which was awarded through competitive bidding is taking only 8.5Bn (50% less) yet the scope is like 4 times more.... for almost double the length (48kms) and double the scope of work (4 lanes along the entire length, with 2 on each side and everything being done afresh)..... Sometimes the government math doesn't add up.... You can read more about the bids for Kenol - Sagana (Lot 1) project here...

Other similar Class A examples include;
-- 17Bn, 25KM ABC - Rironi with over 6 lanes and 10 lanes in some sections and some serious interchanges...
-- 5.3Bn, 20KM Athi river - Machakos turn-off - additional two lanes (similar to eastern bypass scope) but with some serious interchanges and expansive bridges..

To put things into perspective, Kibaki spent Sh8.5 billion 10 years ago for both Eastern (27Km) and Northern bypasses (20Km) including part of Airport North road.. a distance of appx 60KMs, then we are now spending 150% of that amount for about half the scope (just one leg of the project)...

I still believe 12Bn would have enough to deliver so much more... or at least do the same quality but dual even Northern bypass..
