Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the introduction of green-coloured number plates that will be issued to motorists who own electric vehicles.

Speaking during the launch of the e-mobility policy at KICC on Wednesday, March 27, Murkomen announced that the number plates will be issued to Kenyans who also own electric motorcycles.

He added that motorists who currently have number plates that are coloured in different shades of green will have to apply for new number plates.

Currently, the green plates are used by vehicles belonging to county enforcement officers known as kanjos.

Murkomen explained that the number plates were being introduced to help in the easier identification of electric vehicles and motorcycles on the road.

On the other hand, he added that his ministry was introducing the new plates to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles in the country even as the government plans to introduce more incentives for environment-friendly technology.

"All vehicles that are EVs will be given green number plates. Those that have been having the green one need to apply for another one

"We are doing this to encourage them (owners of EVs). We will also have incentives. We will talk to governors to give priority to parking spaces for Electric vehicles which will be cheaper," he announced.

Further, the CS indicated that the number plates would be rolled out after he officially signed the necessary documents.

On the other hand, he added that the Ministry would install some charging systems at his Ministry headquarters so that his Ministry could lead in the uptake of electric vehicles.

He detailed that the infrastructure would be procured in due course hinting that the adoption could be extended to other ministries.

According to data by the government, there are nearly 3,000 registered electric vehicles in the country.

Electric vehicles make no sense at all in a market such as ours, where consumers cannot afford new internal combustion vehicles. Electric vehicles are more expensive that internal combustion vehicles. And electric power is not cheap at all. The primary motivation here is kickbacks from procurement of charging infrastructure.

This regime is clueless and consumed with form over substance.
Instead of addressing the major difficulties we have with transportation, not least the killer-graveyard roads and poorly managed airports and airlines, they are all out on green credentials which don’t even concern Kenya at all.

Pray, how does a 10% discount on a Ksh 100 for electric parking fee matter on the nation?

For this I applaud them, policy has to be ahead of market realities. The few guys with E.Vs right now in Kenya are not paying their share of road maintance levy. This will soon become a problem once adoption grows. You can easily see where this special registration of E.Vs is headed
