DIY - Optimize your home internet

I am not a Futurama fan .
In 2015 I bought the below router. I didn't have much use for the unit since I was using the Huawei 4G router to access the internet. When I shifted to Juja I did away with the 4G connection and got point to point connection. In my quest to get the best out of a 2.5 Mbps connection I did some research and found OpenWRT OS for routers. Luckily the edge router was/is compatible with this wonderful Linux-based operating system. The initial setup was the router running original EdgeOS + a tiny pc with pihole to block ads . This setup was not energy efficient since I need a router and a pc to be always on so as to enjoy adblocking.
Later I flashed the router with OpenWRT OS and the beauty with this OS is blocking adverts is built-in using either AdBlock or Adguard.
I personally use Adblock though I had tried adguard and the resolution time is terrible mostly more than 80ms.
Apart from blocking adverts, I am able to have multiple DNS which helps for a meager 2.5 Mbps, and parental control whereby you can manage internet use for specific devices. For instance, you can limit when the internet connection is available on a specific device e.g smart TV or kids' computing device. There is also a safe search that filters adult content that way mambo ya xvideos issa a no .
Most of the routers that we have at home or businesses are compatible with OpenWRT.You can check if the device is compatible by visiting this page https://openwrt.org/toh/start

In case your ISP supplied you with a router you can request them to change it to bridge mode so that you can have full control over your connection but it will require you to get your preferable router ideally one that is compatible with OpenWRT. This is very useful especially now that Safaricom no longer gives the users access to the router interface to make some changes like WIFI SSID or open network ports. Most of the time you will find that it's impossible to set the fastest /most reliable DNS on the router.
Advantages of OpenWRT

Performance & stability
OpenWrt is designed by network professionals and others who care about the performance of their network. OpenWrt incorporates many algorithms from recent research that perform far better than vendor-supplied firmware.

Security
OpenWrt is an open source software. Many developers from all over the world review the code before it's released

Extensibility
While vendor firmware for routers ships with a fixed set of capabilities, OpenWrt provides more than 3000 packages ready to be installed

Community support
The vibrant community of developers, volunteers, and other long-time OpenWrt users are always available to help solve an issue.

Configuration
Because OpenWrt is a true Linux-based system, you have full control over all functions of your router/device.

Zero cost
OpenWrt is provided for free through its GPL license, and thanks to the efforts of many volunteer contributors (both individuals and companies). There are no subscription or licensing fees.
