Kenyans continue to face tough economic times with prices of basic commodities rising sharply every day. A crate of broiler eggs for instance now costs between 390 to 450 shillings across the different counties up from 300 shillings in November 2021. This means that one egg is sold at 13 shillings up from 10 shillings. Other retail shops sell an egg as high as 15 shillings and 2 for 25 shillings in Nairobi. Most of the traders have cited this increase to the rising cost of fuel and hike in the price of chicken feeds as well as shooting price of other related commodities. In September 2021, Zambia, a key source of animal feeds imports to Kenya, banned the exports of soya and sunflower, which are the major raw materials used in feed production. This pushed the price of soya to 130 shillings per Kilograms from 65 a year ago, while that of sunflower has increased by 10 shillings to retail at 35 shillings.

A 70-kilogram bag of chick marsh is now selling at 4,200 shillings, up from 3,250 shillings while layers marsh is now selling at 3,800 shillings from 3,100 shillings in 2021. Other key ingredients of feeds include wheat bran and maize germ, whose prices have all increased. These changes have all been reflected in the final retail price of eggs.
The approximate price range for Kenyan eggs is between USD 2.04 and USD 1.4 per kilogram or between USD 0.93 and USD 0.64 per pound in 2022. This is approximately 232.97 shillings per kg. The average price for a ton is USD 2,040 in Mombasa and Nairobi. Meanwhile, the price hikes come at a time when Kenyans are looking ahead into the election come August as well as looking at a possible further increase of commodity prices due to the European nation’s crisis that has been on for some time now.

Sema TU you are a fast learner 😁.

Animal feed manufacturers were complaining about the law on genetically modified animal feeds. They were saying it's hard to get compliant animal feed.

Well, well, well, as previously mentioned when politics is in play, common sense goes flying out of the window, laws of supply and demand becomes a figment of economists imagination.
