Gustavo Petro, a former member of the M-19 guerrilla movement, has vowed socio-economic change after sweeping to the presidency on Sunday - becoming the first progressive to do so.

Petro defeated construction magnate Rodolfo Hernandez with a margin of almost 750K votes, despite polling suggesting a much tighter race in the run up.

The new leader and former mayor of the capital Bogota has pledged to make higher education free, and fight inequality.
