Today marks 9 years since Wangari Maathai departed from this world on 25 September 2011 at the age of 71 after a battle with ovarian cancer . She will be remembered for many feats, one of which was precipitating the fall of Moi's KANU regime. In 1990, she single-handedly campaign against the construction of a KANU edifice at Uhuru park and prevailed. This act encouraged defiance against the ruling party from various politicians, which eventually led to the re-introduction of multiparty politics in 1991. If there is one person Moi never forgave, it was Wangari Maathai, and for a good reason; Moi was a keen promoter of the greenbelt movement that thrust Wangari to prominence.
