Affordable fencing

I need to help with a problem of preventing sand harvesters from stealing sand from a parcel of land of about 6 acres. Currently no one stays there so this is a problem. Currently we're not ready for a huge investment of, say, concrete poles maybe in the future.

Any ideas on some kind of barrier that would detract those harvesters in the short term? Is bamboo a viable option?

What will stop them from breaking in if nobody stays there? Or worse off, stealing the fence itself
Good point, though these harvesters are usually folks from far off so I think they assume no one cares about the sand so they simply scoop and leave. We've asked neighbours to be vigilant and deter them, but I think fencing will also act as a psychological deterrent. They breaking down the fence means they're willingly commiting crime which is a whole other issue now.

Thinking of something simple like just erecting poles even without wiring

Depends on how much you are willing to spend, and how soon you want to get it done.

Stone walls are costly, barbed wire/chicken wire fences offer a good compromise on speed and cost, and live fences are very cheap but take a long time to reach their full potential.

If it's a quick and dirty job, euphorbia shrubs can do the job. They make people itch when touched but can be lethal to animals.

If we can spend around 50K kes thereabouts it would be ideal, but we're willing to adjust as necessary

You may want to try kayaba or bougainvillea as stone or wire fencing is going to be costly for a perimetre around 6 acres.

The thing you should have in mind is Kayaba can be a bitch to grow, and bitch to train to become an impenetrable fence. Bougainvillea is more hands-off in comparison.

Thanks, I'll research the timescales for these.
Yes.

Are you growing the bamboo yourself? It is definitely cheaper than buying poles, but the aspect of time also matters. Some variants I've come across huko western mature in 3 years.
Not growing it myself, maybe purchase cheaply.. If a bamboo fence is viable I'll research local prices

Nanleo si uko na maswali...behaving like a bot.
Who says I'm not a bot ;)

Anyway, just offloading 2021 questions befor the New Year.

How much does the place mean to you. An off cut two room shack and a herdsman with a few goats might act a deterrent. He might also start erecting a fence around the piece of land.

But he might also sell the sand.
That's a viable option, but we now have to thing of sustaining someone there with the overheads involved. But someone trustworthy and reliable would make it a worthwhile endeavour. We'll consider this as well.

Tafuta poles alafu zungushia parcel yako. They do not have to be tall or thick since the main agenda is to provide a psychological barrier (make them 3 to 5 feet tall, and 3 to 4 inches thick). The poles could be made from anything that is available cheaply and conveniently. Make sure they are spaced in such a way that a lorry cannot pass through unless they uproot a pole. Ukimaliza kuweka poles zungusha packaging strap all around (Use a heavy duty stapler to nail the strap to the poles). Utaiweka ile design ya seng'enge. The packaging strap is cheap and extremely tough. You would have to cut it using some tool to get through.

Get to the nearest police post. Talk to the incharge and promise 20k once they catch anyone harvesting.
Harvester akishikwa itabidi either atoboke more than the 20k you promised, or uletewe umshtaki for whatever sins you can think of, and extort more than 20k.

Either way, it will act as a deterrent.

Definately when push comes to shove, we'd have to involve the police - but I hope it doesn't get there
