Measles, caused by the measles virus, is a common infection in children. The measles virus is a member of the genus Morbillivirus and is most closely related to the rinderpest virus, which is a pathogen in cattle. The measles virus is thought to have evolved in an environment where cattle and humans lived in close proximity. The crossover from cattle to humans is estimated to have taken place between the 11th and 12th century AD.
