101-year-old former concentration camp guard Josef Scheutz - the oldest person to face trial for Nazi war crimes – has been sentenced in Germany to 5 years in prison, for being an accessory to the murder of 3,518 WW2 prisoners.

Prosecutors successfully proved he “knowingly and willingly” participated in the atrocities at the Sachsenhausen camp that was liberated by Soviet soldiers. After evading justice for almost 80 years, investigators found his name in Moscow’s state military records. Scheutz claimed he did “absolutely nothing” wrong, telling the court “I don’t know why I am here”.

Scheutz is unlikely to serve time behind bars because of his age.
