Salman Rushdie, a British author originally from India, caused a storm in 1988 upon his publication of the novel “The Satanic Verses.” The novel was universally condemned by Muslims for being blasphemous. Consequently, the then Iranian Supreme leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa or order to have Rushdie killed. Since then, multiple killings and attacks have befallen people who have tried to promote the novel in one way or the other, including translators and publishers. As of this date, Iran’s Khordad Foundation upholds a $3 million bounty on Rushdie’s head.
