If I were a lawyer for these families, I would readily let you know that the inherited names could have started in the same fashion (how else?). But if you introduced your kids as Gift and Blessing (a real pair of twins I met), I will place you in a category I would never mention in public.Let us give children their inherited names and leave them to choose what else they want to be called when they know what they are doing.
Mwalimu I feel your pain with the awkwardness of some of these names, but I've become a lot more understanding when I realised many of them happen because a parent translates a name from mother tongue or other language into English in order for it to be 'Christian'.. The original name could be a good name but translated haileti maana kivile..e.g., Kiswahili names like Baraka, Raha, Zawadi sound great, but Blessing, Happiness and Gift just sound wrong. (@upepo sijakuingilia tafadhali!)Since then I have been wondering why parents choose awkward names for their children. In Southern Africa, especially Zambia and Zimbabwe you'll find guys called Witness, Why God, Because, Doesn't Matter, Very Important Person (No Kidding!) Angel etc while Nigerians and Ghanaians have their Jewels, Precious, Triumphant Grandeur, God Is Good, Excel(!) and a beautiful young girl bearing the name Sistersparkle!
If you think this is bad, wait until you hear Tanzanians translate Mtoto mwema Hekima, and Cheupe (Good, Wisdom, and Brown), paired with the baptismal name.but Blessing, Happiness and Gift just sound wrong.
Do you know pastor Twa TWA?Around 15 years ago we visited a young couple around Kiambu. Nothing strange in that until the family's baby girl came to greet us and her name was...wait for it...Shakaina (sp) Glory Wambui. It was the time Oga movies were all the rage. You rented them from the movies man on tape to watch on VCR or VCP. I thought about it then and assumed it could have been due to the influence of the movies that also brought us a number of new mannerisms that we didn't have hitherto.

Closer home our Bukusu brethren have Metrine and Metrix and a few others I can't remember.

Recently a guy from Zimbabwe called Foward was asking me out. I couldn't get past his nameAround 15 years ago we visited a young couple around Kiambu.
