Thika Road, Nairobi
Police have advised motorists and commuters alike to be clear of major metropolitan highways on Thursday, June 24.
The World Rally Championship will be flagged off at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC), thereby warranting the low-density use of Uhuru and Thika Highways between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. This comes as a public safety concern for both rally participants and a majority of road users.
The vehicles will then pass through Parliament Road, Haile Selassie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Wangari Mathai Road, and then head on to Kasarani through Thika Road.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i speaks during the launch of the Excellence Charter developed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The Safari Rally vehicles will then make their way back to Thika Road, passing through Muthaiga as they head to Naivasha.
Nairobi Area Traffic Commander Joshua Omukata disclosed that even though the roads would not be closed, there would be constant disruptions until the event wrapped up

WRC Safari Rally Kenya
The WRC returns to Africa for the first time since 2002. The Safari of old has evolved to fit the modern-day WRC, but its character remains with challenging closed dirt roads, stunning picture-postcard scenery and exotic wildlife. Competitors can expect rocky and rutted tracks and unpredictable weather which could transform dry and dusty trails into glutinous mudbaths.
Event History
- The Safari Rally was first held in 1953, as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
- In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Kenya Safari Rally.
- Held on roads still open to the public, it became notorious as the toughest round of the WRC. Arduous conditions and constantly changing weather and more than 5000 competitive kilometres made simply finishing an achievement.
- The event adopted a special stage format in 1996 and from then until 2002, it featured over 1000km of timed tests. The rally left the WRC in 2002.
- Kenya’s Shekhar Mehta tops the Safari’s WRC roll of honour with five wins.
Stages
• Full coverage from Safari Rally Kenya will be available on WRC+ All Live here, including every stage broadcast as it happens as well as key interviews, features and expert analysis from the service park.
- Thursday lunchtime’s traditional Safari start in the heart of capital city Nairobi is followed by a side-by-side super special in the afternoon at Kasarani, north-east of the city centre.
- Friday’s opening leg covers the southern shore of Lake Naivasha. Chui Lodge and Oserian, both in the Oserengoni Wildlife Conservancy Estate which is home to lions, leopards, giraffes, antelope and buffalo, sandwich Kedong, at 32.68km the longest stage of the rally and a Safari test of old. After service, all three are repeated to bring the day’s total to 129.78km.
- Roads further north around Lake Elmenteita host Saturday’s 132.08km of action. It opens with Elmenteita’s oft-used tracks in the Delamere Estate. It is followed by Soysambu and Sleeping Warrior, set in the shadow of a hill that ressembles a Masai warrior lying down. The trio are driven for a second time after service.
- Sunday’s finale spans both the north and south sides of Lake Naivasha. The forested Loldia to the north and Hell’s Gate to the south sandwich the rocky Malewa. The first two tests are then driven again. The second pass through Hell’s Gate, which finishes amid stunning scenery at Fishers Tower, forms the Wolf Power Stage.
- The 18 stages total 320.19km.
Iconic Stage
- Saturday’s Soysambu stage. It is classic Safari with a little bit of everything that made this event so legendary. A couple of river crossings near the finish with steep entries and exits, mud trucks on standby to pull anyone clear who gets stuck, big straights, flowing corners, rough compressions, and hard lava roads – what’s not to like?
Service park
- The purpose-built service park is based at the Kenya Wildlife Training Institute. It overlooks Lake Naivasha, almost 100km north-west of capital city Nairobi in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. Keep an eye out for hippos on the water’s edge…..
Challenge
- It’s new for everyone. None of the frontline drivers have competed on the Safari before so they must acclimatise quickly to different road characteristics.
- A tough recce awaits crews, who must prepare highly detailed pace notes from a blank piece of paper in only two passes through each stage.
- Mechanical sympathy. Some sections are so rocky they must be tackled at little more than walking pace. Drivers must resist the temptation to treat the Safari like a normal gravel event.
- Heavy rain will add an additional challenge to an already gruelling event. Few will have come across the deep water and mud that can replace dusty roads in a matter of minutes.
Car spec
- Gravel suspension.
- The ride height will be lifted above the norm for a traditional gravel event to allow for the rocky roads.
- Pirelli’s hard and soft compound Scorpion tyres available.
